[Rice Riots at Coal Pits (Yama) #14: Riots in the Kaho and Iizuka Dstricts]
20.9 x 30.2 cm Ink Painting

On the evening of September 3rd, some people exploded dynamite three times on the refuse heap of the No.4 pit of Kamimio Coal Pit run by Mr. Aso. The great explosions ripped the air of the pit, blew rock dust into the sky, and encouraged the rioters. The military hastened there immediately from Iizuka, 4 kilometers away from the pit. However, the pit was calm after the explosions. The criminals were not identified. However, more than ten nayagashiras (miner-group bosses) who had been negotiating with the company were all arrested for inciting miners to rise against it according to Article 17 of the Security Police Law. Later, three criminals including Seitaro Nakagawa were identified. However, two or three nayagashiras were found guilty after being confined in the house of detention for more than three months (because the pit workers fussed when they negotiated a raise).
