The inside rims of some Moso bamboo hoops with diameters of about 1.5 meters were lined with some pieces of lagging arranged in a circle, and small pieces of debris (kobota) filled the inside of the cribbing. This was a way to build filled cribbing in pits producing little debris (bota), and building such complicated cribbing for supporting roofs was impossible for small-scale coal pits. This kind of cribbing was used at Nittetsu Inatsuki Coal Pit in the Taisho era (1912-1926). However, it was a time when no steel pillars were used. This filled cribbing collapsed easily when it received increased rock pressure, and so it was easy to remove from old workings. Additionally, the tip of the foot of each piece of lagging called narugi (used for cribbing at workings with soft bottoms) was sharpened in order that it would gradually sink and the lagging would not break in a short time. This type of cribbing was not effective at workings with thick coal beds.
