[Movable Cribbing at Nittetsu Inatsuki Coal Pit in the Former Half of the Showa Era (1926-1989)]
21.2 x 30.2 cm Ink Painting

Text at the Right End
This cribbing was built only with timber of the same shape as the old tie (sleeper: surippa in pit dialect) for railway tracks and it was sometimes used after being cut in two.

Text at the Top Left to Left End
This type of cribbing was easy to build but quite hard to remove. All skilled pit workers did the removal work of the cribbing, but the disaster rate of the job was among the greatest of all jobs at the pit.
The cribbing removals were done on holidays or during the time of the third shift (from 12:00 a.m. to the dawn) together with trough removals. Even if they did not need the timber used for the cribbing any more, they had to remove it in order to close old workings. In certain cases, they broke and abandoned two pieces of timber at the top of the cribbing.
