[Pit Workers in the Old Days #7 (2) (Attaching Flanges to Pipes)]
21.3 x 30.3 cm Ink Painting

Text at the Bottom Right
The pipeline workers carefully and rhythmically struck the front of the junction of the pipe and its flange to seal the junction after heating both. However, the steam would immediately burst out if they did not strike and seal the neck of the junction.

Text at the Top Left
If they had to seal many pipes and their flanges, they sealed two flanges on both sides of a pipe at the same time. They sweated even in the cold of winter because they heated up the pipes and flanges to seal them. They raised their hammers high and struck the pipes and flanges countless times.
The inexperienced atoyama (helper; pipe holder) would be scolded if he did not turn the pipe very well.
